WAPC Rules and Regulations
For Participants
The following are Rules and Regulations established for a participant's conduct during the West Australian Pianists Competition by the Director and the Organising Committee.
It is the Committee's conscious decision that this competition is open to pianists of any nationality, amateurs or professionals in order to uphold the high standards of this competition.
Entries Rules

Entry to the competition must be submitted on the standard entry form via website by 11:59pm AWST on the 26th of May 2024. Applicants must ensure that all requirements, as referred to on the entry form, are complied with.

The committee may refuse any entry, and amend or withdraw any section without giving a reason for doing so. In the event that a competition section is cancelled, participants will be refunded the entry fee in full.

For sections subject to an age requirement, the age at 1st June 2024 shall be considered to be the age of the competitor.

All competitors are allowed free entry to the venue throughout the competition. Competitor entries include 1 parent/guardian to accompany the competitor.

Chosen prize winners are invited to perform at the Winners' Concert. The Committee must be notified of any absence or failure to perform on the day.

All award winners must attend the Winners’ Concert to collect your prizes. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of the award won during the competition.

The WAPC Committee will not take responsibility for any participant input errors on entry forms. It is the participant's responsibility to notify the Committee of any submission errors as soon as possible.

No further submission changes can be made after 11:59pm AWST on the 26th of May 2024. This includes no change of pieces, participant names or chosen sections.

By submitting an entry, the competitor is consenting for their performance to be recorded and used for Committee review and promotional purposes.

Refunds will not be allowed after entry submission.
Category Requirements

Reusing the same piece(s) in different sections are not allowed, except for sections in category 2. Please refer to the Entry Information page.

Competitors are allowed to enter only 1 section from Category 1, and 1 section from Category 2.

Category 4 and category 5 requires competitors to perform all their chosen works by memory. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.

The category 5 section Open Solo Championship (Item No. 21) is usually for competitors performing above AMEB Grade 8 level. Competitors are not required to follow the AMEB syllabus for repertoire choice.
Competition Proceedings

It is recommended that competitors arrive and report their attendance 15 minutes prior to the commencement time of their section.

Performers must bring a physical clean copy of the sheet music, of their performance piece(s) for the adjudicator. This will sheet music will be taken in the front door and given to the adjudicators.

In the event that a competitor is absent for their time of performance, their order of performance will be automatically relocated to the last of the section. If they have not arrived the competition venue or notified the committee by the end of the last competitor's performance, they will be disqualified.

Competitors must perform their piece(s) when called upon to do so.

Competitors must play the piece(s) stated on their entry form. Other pieces or substitutes are not permitted.

Competitors must adhere to time limits. If a competitor has performed over the time limit indicated, they will be immediately asked to end their performance and exit the stage.

Overall presentation including appropriate attire and performance etiquette may be taken into consideration by the adjudicator.

The adjudicator may withdraw an award in any section or not present an award should the standard of performance be inadequate for a credit.

The committee accepts no responsibility for public liability.

The committee accepts no responsibility for damage or loss of personal property of person(s) attending the competition.

Any and all protests/complaints must be submitted to the committee in writing within 2 hours of completion of the relevant section. The committee will consider such protests with the adjudicator(s) and decide the outcome of the matter as soon as practicably possible. The decision will be final.

Competitors are encouraged to perform from memory, except for category 3 and category 4 which must be performed from memory. If performing from scores/sheets music, the original score/sheets must be used. Photocopies are permitted but only for the purpose of page turning and in such cases the competitor must also present the original scores/sheets.

The use of cameras, mobile phones and tape recorders during performances is permitted only for competitors’ own performances and not of other competitors. If members of the audience are found to be recording competitor's videos without given consent, they will be immediately removed from the venue. Recording noise must be kept to the minimum and no flash photography is allowed.

The competition holds no accountability for members of the public recording or publishing competitors videos.

The WAPC Committee retains the right to record any and all of its participants for publications on websites and for promotional purposes. If a competitor would like to be excluded, they must notify the Committee prior to any publications.

Competitors, teachers or parents/guardians related to the competitors are not permitted to approach or talk to the adjudicator during each of the competition sections. Any unnecessary communications between the adjudicator and personnel related to the competitor, will subsequently result in the disqualification of the competitor.
General Rules

Competitors and participants must comply to all the aformentioned rules and regulations on this page. Any deviation or violation of these rules will be met with immediate disqualification.

The adjudicator's vote and decision is always final and completely backed up by the Committee. Any complaints must be directed to the Committee and its members. The adjudicator will not tolerate complaints.

Any verbal or physical violence towards the adjudicator or Committee members will not be tolerated, and will result in immediate disqualification and removal from the venue.
